Antihistamine
Blocks histamine. Histamine is a signaling molecule, sending messages between cells. Blocking histamine signaling can help to limit allergic reactions including itch. Histamine is not generally believed to be causative in PFIC, thus efficacy may be limited. Histamines may keep people awake, so using ANTIhistamines may cause drowsiness.
May help control milder pruritus, but generally not very effective for moderate to severe pruritus. Drowsiness induced by antihistamines (especially diphenhydramine) has the potential benefit of promoting sleep when taken at bedtime.
